run-gg-2

I proposed that we create the inaugural VMworld 2009 “Run the Golden Gate” race but I need your help to make it happen.

Basic info:

  • The Golden Gate is 1.7 miles long or 3.4 round-trip
  • The GG is 5 miles from our hotel
  • A round-trip run would be about 13 miles (half marathon) and more than I really want to attempt at VMworld :)
  • I read that it is best to run it before 8am as, after that, the tourists come out and you may be walking or dodging them on the bridge

Run the Golden Gate - VMworld 2009Here are some questions that I have and I need your input:

  1. What morning should we run it?
  2. What do you think about Monday morning, 7am?
  3. Where do we want to meet to run it?
  4. Hmmm, maybe I need to get us all some t-shirts that say “VMworld 2009 – I RAN THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE” – that would be cool !
  5. Any company out there want to, say, donate $500 to charity if we can get 10+ people to run it?
  6. Any other comments or concerns?

Once this is all finalized, I will blog post about it and invite others!

Also, please note that when I run, I run to “finish”, not to “win”. I fully expect everyone to beat me across. I’ll just be enjoying the scenery :)

T-shirts would be cool. I bet you could easily get these sponsored…. but 13 miles in total at 06:00 in the morning before VMworld. Wow :-)

Monday morning is fine!

David Davis 08.04.09 at 1:27 pm

Thanks Duncan for your comments!

Honestly, I didn’t expect to run 13 miles. I was planning on setting up a meet point near the bridge and just running the 3 mile bridge plus maybe a little more to and from the meet point.

So, that’s one vote for Monday morning!

Chris Wolf 08.04.09 at 1:38 pm

2. I’m game for Monday at 7 AM (6:30 would be even better). I haven’t gotten the analyst schedule yet, but I’m expecting to be busy from 8:30-5:00. Monday evening might be another alternative that works for everyone, but I’m not sure how easy it will be to run the bridge at that time.

3. Meeting place – best case – VMware (or a sponsor) offers a couple of shuttles to take us from the Moscone to the GG and back.

4. I think something like a VMworld 5K t-shirt would be really cool.

5. I think if we get the word out, it won’t be hard to get at least 20, if not a lot more.

6. Thanks for getting this organized. I hope we can pull it off!

duncan 08.04.09 at 1:39 pm

if it’s just the 3.4 miles I will be there for sure.

@sakacc is on a holiday currently but I bet he’s also up for it :-)

Now, let’s start emailing our friends from Veeam, EMC, VMware, Dell, HP, Cisco, Vizioncore, IBM… and pick a charity. Let’s get at least 25 people!

virtualTodd 08.04.09 at 1:45 pm

I will not be landing in SF until Monday morning. So I would vote for Tues or Wed morning.

The ideas for T-shirts, a sponsor, and a charity are great!

David Strebel 08.04.09 at 2:22 pm

I’m in for Tues or Wed

Jason Silva 08.04.09 at 8:11 pm

I also won’t be landing until Monday. Tues or Wed. would definitely work.

James Knapp 08.04.09 at 9:59 pm

i’m keen and I vote Tues for what’s its worth
cheers

Piergiorgio Spagnolatti 08.04.09 at 11:53 pm

Very cool. Tue or Wed is ok for me.

Lode 08.05.09 at 1:44 am

Count me in for monday morning!

I’m staying at Westin hotel in Market street, so a shuttle/shared cab/… from Moscone would work.

Cheers,
Lode (Twitter: lode)

Lipongo 08.05.09 at 4:18 pm

I’d run/walk it as I am horribly out of shape. If there is a free t-shirt I’m in! Just let me know the time and date and I am there.

duncan 08.05.09 at 10:04 pm

If we do get sponsors we should pick one of the “environmental” charities. And how about 500$ per 10 attendees.

Forbes Guthrie 08.05.09 at 11:39 pm

Count me in! Any morning is fine (there are parties every night I think :) . Great idea.

Vlad Nagornyi 08.05.09 at 11:41 pm

Haven’t run more than 45 ft. in one direction in a while, but I’m up for the challenge :-)

Frank Brix Pedersen 08.06.09 at 12:31 am

Hi,

I would love to do the run with you. Only issue is that I have to be at the VMworld Trainer day @ moscone monday at 9.0 am. I am ready any day at 7 o’clock

Rico aka elaurs 08.06.09 at 1:08 am

Hi,

I’m up for it if it’s 3,4 miles – around 6 km right? I’m not a strong runner, but I think I can manage 6 km. :-)
I’ll arrive in SF on Saturday and will be staying at Hilton – not sure how far away the hotel is from the bridge?

I think monday would be a good day for me.

I’ll make a link to this post on the danish user group to spread the word.
Excellent idea David!

Cheers
/Rico

Raiko Mesterheide 08.06.09 at 1:29 am

Great. I planed to run the bridge anyway!

Count me in for every morning to run the 3.4 miles :-)

regards
Raiko Mesterheide

Frank Brix Pedersen 08.06.09 at 1:50 am

I am ready. What about doing the run from Moscone and then taking a bus back? Then it is only 10K :-)

Christian Heigl 08.06.09 at 2:16 am

Hi,
I’m fine on monday, wednesday and thursday. tuesday i’ll take the enterprise admin exam.
what about a EMC/NetApp T-Shirt :) ?
Chris

Alan Y. 08.06.09 at 5:43 am

I would love to keep in the loop on this. Any day you pick is fine with me.

Henrik 08.06.09 at 6:32 am

Great idea, I’m in, just NOT thursday morning ;)

Regards Henrik

Bill Powers 08.06.09 at 7:13 am

@billmaxpowers is in for the running the bridge, but not to the bridge.

Cody Bunch 08.06.09 at 7:17 am

I’m in. Where/When, and will there be a shuttle? I’m a San Fran nooblet and easily get lost.

Anthony Ciske 08.06.09 at 7:45 am

I’d be in for this. Tues or Wed is best for me.

Twitter: @gooch

David Davis 08.06.09 at 9:54 am

Thank you to everyone for the ton of comments! Wow!

It is looking more and more like the run will be Tuesday morning. This is because most votes are for Tuesday or Wednesday but I am afraid that after all the parties on Tuesday night, few would show up early Wednesday morning.

More details will follow before the end of this week. I will then post an official notice with all the race details so stay tuned!

Thanks,
David

Jon Boler 08.06.09 at 10:12 am

This sounds cool! My only issue is getting some transportation from downtown to the run area. Could we all chip in for something like that? Tuesday works good for me.

Joann 08.06.09 at 10:57 am

What a great idea! Count me in, Tuesday or any other day is fine.

Jase McCarty 08.06.09 at 1:25 pm

I can bring up the rear!

Gina 08.06.09 at 1:46 pm

Sounds like fun! For the 3.1 miles that is :o )
6:30 on Monday I agree would be best.
As far as location, let me know as I’ve never been to SF – tagging along with DH this year.
I would LOVE a t-shirt ;)

Gina 08.06.09 at 1:50 pm

I’m interested in running the bridge too :o ) Early morning works for me.
Tshirt would be great!

Mike Heil 08.06.09 at 2:43 pm

Yes, I am in, Tuesday at 7 AM is good for me. I will watch for any transportation options on this site. Worst case several of us share a cab. I will be in the Union Square area. Thanks, it is a great idea.

Mike Heil 08.06.09 at 2:53 pm

Thought, since the general session begins at 8 AM, how about 6:30 AM to start?

Joe Holbrook 08.06.09 at 2:54 pm

Great idea. If the time worked I would participate. Could also see if we could sponsor.

Jeremy Waldrop 08.06.09 at 3:05 pm

Count me in, any morning is fine with me.

Shane Schnell 08.06.09 at 3:42 pm

I’m in as well. What about spouses?

Mike Hurst 08.06.09 at 4:53 pm

I’m in for this!!

duncan 08.07.09 at 12:28 am

So if 3PAR also sponsors the list would be:
VMware, EMC, Veeam, 3PAR!

This is looking good guys…. but we need more people to join so spread the word!

Ben 08.07.09 at 4:13 am

Great idea, I’m arriving on Monday PM so would be good for Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday mornings.

Gina 08.07.09 at 7:42 am

I’m in! Would love a tshirt… Early morning at 6:30 would be fine.

Shawn D 08.07.09 at 8:44 am

I am in, if we can do early Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Tuesday would be best

Mike Mc 08.07.09 at 8:55 am

Me and a buddy are in.

Michael 08.07.09 at 2:25 pm

I’m in. Monday morning would be fine. Like the t-shirt idea.

Jason Boche 08.07.09 at 2:54 pm

This is great and I’m glad it has blossomed into something more than casual plans between Duncan and I. Any morning except Thursday morning, although, I’ll likely be up late every night as others have eluded to.

Jas

Jay weinshenker 08.07.09 at 6:19 pm

I’ll vote for Tuesday morning – I could do Monday morning but I scheduled a lab for early on Monday.

Any distance up to and including the half marathon – might as well run long, we’ll be sitting all day!

Ian K 08.07.09 at 9:06 pm

I am up for doing the GG. I can’t make 13 miles in a single event even though I do run regularly.

Count me in. @iankoenig

Ian K 08.07.09 at 9:21 pm

I’m in. @iankoenig

#1/#2 – Monday morning is best for me. 7am works. Doing other days (maybe tuesday would work) though rest of tons of things going on at VMworld in the mornings or nights before.

#3 – Would be nice to have a shuttle from say the Moscone Center to GG leaving at say 6:30am. Something to get those of us that can’t do the full 13 miles though can do the 3-5K range. Ideally have water at the end/middle with the shuttle.

#4 – I’m in for shirts. Maybe get the sponsors to think about it. Maybe push our collective VMware folks to help cover something like this.

#5 – That sounds great. I can’t believe we as a group can’t get a couple vendors to throw down here.

#6 – How should we organize our sponsor list? So we aren’t all hitting up the same sponsors from different angles.

Forbes Guthrie 08.07.09 at 11:07 pm

Just an idea. With this many sponsors, perhaps we should pool the funds and get dry-fit type t-shirts or singlets. 100% cotton t-shirts are pretty nasty to run in. Alternatively, maybe we should just donate all the t-shirt money to a worthwhile local charity – I have a feeling we’ll all have a surplus of corporate t-shirts by the end of the week anyway :)

Will Huber 08.09.09 at 9:18 am

This is a great idea… I am in for any day!

Duncan 08.10.09 at 7:13 am

David and myself are working on arranging shuttles.

t-shirts are also being discussed, more news soon.

@VMCarrie 08.10.09 at 9:54 am

Veeam is up for supplying some t-shirts! Let’s talk offline about the details, quantities, etc. This sounds like fun!

Ted Spero 08.10.09 at 11:54 am

Absolutely, sounds great! I’m actually flying to Anaheim, CA right after VMWorld to run the Disneyland Half Marathon, so this would be a great warm-up for the 13.1 mile run the following weekend!

KellyOlivier 08.10.09 at 5:33 pm

I would love to get in on this, but I scheduled a lab for 730 am Monday.

Gray 08.11.09 at 7:12 am

Count me in…

Jon Andersson 08.11.09 at 7:38 am

It sounds like a very cool idea.

I would love to run the golden gate!
Any more info on where and when?

Chirag Shah 08.11.09 at 4:54 pm

Sounds like a great idea…

Heck, I’d be willing to pay for the T-shirt, I’d love to run for a cause.

Tuesday works for my schedule. I’d probably just wake up early and take the bus or something over. I’m staying at the Hilton Financial District, so if anyone staying there wants to share a cab or something, that works too.

PJ Biodrowski 08.12.09 at 9:47 am

Count me in.
I just need to figure out how to get there from the Mosser, never been to SF before.

T-Bagger 08.12.09 at 1:18 pm

Let’s do thisssssssssss!!!! Keep us updated on a concrete start time and a meeting spot

JoshMcse 08.14.09 at 10:04 am

I just finished my registration for VmWorld. I am an avid runner here in Arkansas and would love to join your guys for a run, race, etc. Please keep me updated!

Mike Laskowski 08.14.09 at 1:18 pm

Hey guys, I would love to join the run. If you can plese keep us in the loop once you have more info.

Lars G 08.14.09 at 1:43 pm

I’m interested.
I would love a t-shirt…

Roy Mikes 08.14.09 at 2:54 pm

Oh man I wish I could be there.

Tristan Todd 08.14.09 at 6:50 pm

I’m in. Staying near Moscone and plan on running to the bridge. Just need a meet-up location. I”m hoping that we can do this early, early. Thanks for setting this up!

Dave 08.15.09 at 7:31 pm

I’m up for a run any day but thursday morning. I’d be up for sharing a cab

Joshua Wright 08.16.09 at 8:50 am

I’m in for any day but Monday. Tuesday is my preference though. Two other guys are coming with me so three total.

Benny Hauk 08.17.09 at 7:17 am

Tuesday sounds Great! I’ll add that there is a thread going on in the VMware forums as well about David’s run.

Lars G 08.17.09 at 7:46 am

I’m interested in running the bridge
I would love a t-shirt

Benny Hauk 08.18.09 at 12:55 pm

So just for clarification (or perhaps in order to confuse things further) there is a run scheduled for Monday night at 6:30pm as well. I don’t know if this is your event, David, or a different event. Honestly I’m just looking for a group to run with, not looking for a big official race, sponsors, charities, etc.

Rico aka elaurs 08.19.09 at 12:55 am

I can see that this is going to happen Monday…in the evening? Howcome?
Not exactly what I had hoped for. :-(

Cheers
/Rico
