Dallas VMware User Group (VMUG) – Update 3Q 2008

I recently attended the Dallas / Fort Worth Area VMware User Group (DFW VMUG) meeting. We had an amazing turnout of 75+ attendees. Dell presented their storage array technology and how it integrates into VMware’s Site Recovery Manager (SRM). VMSight presented their performance management and reporting software for VDI. DFW VMUG President Tony Gradig covered what he learned at VMworld 2008 and offered some great VMware how-to tips. VMware engineers were on hand to answer questions. And finally, the VMUG was nice enough to have me speak about my Train Signal VMware ESX Server video training series, allowing me to show a video, offer some training videos as door prizes, and allowed me to offer a discount to all VMUG members.

I snapped the photos below of the meeting. I want to give a big thanks to Tony for planning the meeting, being the emcee, and for providing the excellent meeting room at his company’s HQ. (don’t tell anyone but we even had free pizza)

Best of VMworld Awards

I will be a judge at the Best of VMworld Awards product competition this year at VMworld 2008 in Las Vegas. I am very excited about it and I hope that all companies who have a VMware-related product submit their nomination.

So, does your company produce a VMware-related software application, hardware device, or widget? If so, you need to make sure that you register your product to be judged at the Best of VMworld Awards.

VMware commericials (like Geico) “saves a ton of money in my infrastructure”

Over at VMware’s SMB website, they have produces some very funny promotional videos for VMware. These videos remind me a lot of those Geico commercials where they say that they “saved a ton of money on their car insurance”. However, in these videos, the VMware customers talk about how they “saves a ton of money in my infrastructure”. The cool thing is that they videos are entertaining – like a Geico commercial or those apple vs. Microsoft commercials. Check them out and be prepared to smile!

Diane Greene – OUT – “New Guy” IN

Today, VMware announced a huge change in their executive leadership – Diane Greene was “shown the door” and Paul Maritz was brought in as President and CEO – WOW! Diane Greene has been such a strong force at VMware – so visible at VMworld – and such a great promoter of the company (you can see her in the video below).

Who is this “new guy”? Let’s find out by looking at his bio-

Paul Maritz, President and CEO
Paul Maritz is President and CEO of VMware, Inc. Prior to joining VMware, Maritz was President, Cloud Infrastructure and Services Division at EMC Corporation. He joined EMC in February 2008 when EMC acquired Pi Corporation, where he was the founder and CEO.

Maritz is an IT veteran and visionary who spent 14 years working at Microsoft, where he served as a member of the five-person Executive Committee that managed the overall company. He oversaw the development and marketing of System Software Products (including Windows 95, Windows NT, and Windows 2000), Development Tools (Visual Studio) and Database Products (SQL Server), and the complete Office and Exchange Product Lines. Prior to joining Microsoft, he spent five years working at Intel Corporation.

Maritz is a graduate in Mathematics and Computer Science of the Universities of Cape Town and Natal in South Africa. Currently, he serves on the board of several privately-held software companies and also serves as Chairman of the Board of the Grameen Foundation, which supports microfinance around the world. He has an active interest in the use of technology in developing countries and in wildlife issues.

A Microsoft guy huh? Perhaps he knows how to crush Hyper-V with ESX Server? Let’s hope so
